Oklahoma Climatological Survey

Established in 1980, the Oklahoma Climatological Survey (OCS) is mandated to acquire, process and disseminate climate and weather data and information for use by the state’s citizens. OCS also serves as the support facility for the State Climatologist, hosts a wide variety of educational outreach and climate related services and operates the Oklahoma Mesonet.

Climatologists at OCS specialize in helping Oklahoma’s citizens and decision-makers use weather and climate information. With an overwhelming wealth of information available on the web, OCS’s staff understands available resources and matches them to client needs, such as drought monitoring and economic development.

OCS is home to OK-FIRST, an educational outreach and service program for public safety officials who need to access and apply real-time weather information in their decision-making processes. In addition, OCS operates EarthStorm, an enhancement program for K-12 science, mathematics and technology educators across Oklahoma that provides exciting learning activities for students.

The operation of the Oklahoma Mesonet, a world-class network of environmental monitoring stations, is housed at OCS. The Oklahoma Mesonet consists of more than 110 automated measurement stations located in the 77 counties of Oklahoma. Each Mesonet station measures a wide range of variables, such as air temperature and rainfall. At five minute intervals, this data is sent to OCS for quality assurance and packaged into products for thousands of customers. Mesonet data have the capacity to save lives, save Oklahoma taxpayers and businesses millions of dollars annually, increase the efficiency of energy and water use, educate the next generation of citizens, and make an incalculable contribution to research projects every year.

“The Oklahoma Climatological Survey is the nation’s leader in climate services to state and local decision-makers resulting in the improvement of the quality of life for all Oklahomans.” - Ken Crawford, Director
